Area Overview
An area of incredible natural beauty, Brevard is a popular retiree and tourist destination approximately 25 miles south of Asheville in the Blue Ridge Mountains. More than half of Transylvania County is dedicated to national and state forests, and the county is populated by many families with roots going back to the early settlers. Known as “The Land of Waterfalls” and “the mountain bike capital of the Eastern United States,” the area is a popular destination for hiking, paddling, backpacking, cycling, fishing, rock climbing and camping.
Although Brevard’s population is under 8,000, there is a vibrant cultural life here. Brevard College is a small private college with an excellent faculty and the Brevard Music Center Summer Festival enjoys a national reputation. Blue Ridge Community College, a two-year institution offering academic, vocational and adult enrichment programs, has one of the largest continuing education programs in the state. Brevard is home to both philharmonic and choral societies, as well as an excellent library, restaurants and art galleries. In addition, Brevard’s small-town charm provides abundant fun for all ages with many events held throughout the year, including, but not limited to: monthly art gallery walks and weekly old time street dances in the summer; a Memorial Day weekend White Squirrel Festival (yes, they really do exist!); a July 4th Festival; a Halloweenfest (it IS Transylvania County, after all!); and a Holiday Twilight Tour.
